Reshaping the Narrative includes both contemporary and historical works from Mills College Art Museum’s permanent collection and highlights California, and the Bay Area in particular, as a site of resistance, abundance, and celebration.

Drawing inspiration from the diverse cultures and remarkable histories that define California, the featured artists offer unique and local perspectives on themes that resonate during this presidential election year, such as immigration, civil rights, labor activism, reproductive rights, gentrification, and cultural identity. The exhibition explores the way these issues have inspired and informed artists’ research and work over the past century. Through various mediums including painting, sculpture, and photography, the artists create pieces that challenge conventional narratives and offer new perspectives on California’s rich history and complex social landscape.

Over 50 works from the collection will be on view, and featured artists include: Craig Calderwood, Carmen Lomas Garza, David Huffman, Keba Armand Konte, Hung Liu, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Yolanda Lopez, John Outterbridge, Raymond Saunders, Young Suh, and Weston Teruya.

This exhibition is supported by the Susan L. Mills Art Gallery and Print Collection endowments.
