MARCH 30, 2018
2018 ART + FEMINISM WIKIPEDIA EDIT-A-THON
12:00–6:00 PM, F. W. OLIN LIBRARY

JOIN THE EVENT BY CLICKING HERE.
New editors are encouraged to create a Wikipedia account.

In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as women. This lack of inclusive participation has led to an alarming gap of content in the world’s most popular online research tool.

To address the well-known gender gap on Wikipedia, MCAM in partnership with the F. W. Olin Library, Canyon Cinema, and Rebekah Edward’s Queer Encyclopedia course invite you to edit and add to visibility of women and queer-identifying artists on Wikipedia—an increasingly important repository of knowledge. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. We’ll have some inspiration available as well.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

We welcome people of all gender identities and expressions; feminists of all waves; editors of all experience levels; and artists of all disciplines to contribute. Refreshments will be provided for everyone.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Check in and sign up for a Wikipedia account here and RSVP here.

HOW TO EDIT

New editors can download this very simple editing guide and watch training videos here.

Staff, experienced Wikipedians, and Ambassadors and from Rebekah Edwards Queer Encyclopedia class will be available on the day of the event to provide training and support for new editors, as well.

WHAT TO WORK ON

  • If you have 1 hour or less, go to a training and learn more about editing Wikipedia.
  • If you have 90 minutes, go to a training and add some citations to an article in your area of expertise.
  • If you have 2 hours, add a well cited paragraph to an article in your area of expertise.
  • If you have over 2 hours, consider creating a new article. Be sure to gather your reliable sources and check in with an experienced Wikipedian to ensure that your article meets Wikipedia’s notability guidelines.

Don’t know what to work on? Visit our meetup page! We also have books and articles available for inspiration! (black)

ART PROGRAMMING

To keep you engaged and motivated, artistic interventions and inspiration have been generously provided by Canyon Cinema and current Art+Process+Ideas artist-in-residence, Indira Allegra. Both events will be accessible for the duration of the event.

AFFECT ONLY

How does the work of the wiki-thon make you feel? What do you do with the pressure built up around being believable? Behind every public writing is an emotional essay shaped by the way we feel the task of believability exceeds our own code-switching abilities. Affect Only is a lounge for your language when tired of ostensive objectivities. Let your text relax its well-informed performance and login to an emotional entry together. The Affect Only lounge will open to the public the day of the event. Log into Affect Lounge here.

Ranging from 1970–1989, the films display unexpected images by women that comment on how we present and perform ourselves, both in private and in public, in relation to oneself and to pop culture. The screening features works by Coni Beeson, Dana Plays, Alice Anne Parker Severson, Elizabeth Sher, Greta Snider, and Jean Sousa.
